I just read the above article in the Wall Street Journal (01/17/12) that I would like to share. Here are some of the main aspects:
“The gut is important in medical research, not just for problems pertaining to the digestive system but also problems pertaining to the rest of the body” (wsj)
- the small intestine alone has 100 million neurons (roughly the amount that can be found the the spinal cord)
- the brain receives more information from the gut than the gut from the brain
- problems in the gut may cause problems in the brain
- gut flora plays a role in how the body responds to stress
- 95 % of the serotonin (neurotransmitter in the brain) in the body is made in the gut
- link between health of the gut and autism (see GAPS)
So don’t forget: ” Let food be thy food and medicine be thy food” Hyppocrates
